A Month in May

"A Month in May" is a jewellery
collection that investigates form and identity. Each brooch is
an imitation of a photographic image, one taken on each day of
the month of May 2007. The images are a record of observations
of objects and forms, some of which are generally overlooked or
seemingly insignificant. The images range widely and include
abandoned detritus, natural objects, household items, and human
imprint. On one particular day no image was recorded and hence
the jewellery piece represents this "missing"
observation.
Firmly entrenched in the approaches of
the falsity of set design, and following the anti-jewellery
philosophy, the pieces challenge received notions of jewellery
making and reject ideas of value and preciousness. Made with
materials to hand and with time constraints (every effort has
been made to work quickly and for effect) the brooches are
concerned with process, the desire to re-create the actual
appearances of the object. Often calling into use unexpected
materials and techniques, in combination with surprisingly
traditional jewellery methods, the resultant jewellery is both
meticulous and klutzy.
Identity, being the labelling of things,
is concerned with issues of context and knowledge. This
collection attempts to break down this system of recognition to
one of pure observation. The identity of the original observed
object is abandoned as the context and content lose
acknowledgement. The isolated image is analytically studied to
produce a jewellery object faithfully, without sentiment.
